(1936 - 2009)
graduated at the Charles University in Prague
in theoretical physics and, during his whole scientific carrier, he was
with the Czechoslovak (or Czech) Academy of Sciences at the Institute
of Physical Metallurgy, the Institute of Geophysics and, during the last 20 years, at the Institute
of Mathematics. He was one of the leading
experts in stereology, integral geometry and stochastic geometry
and his scientific works were devoted to applications of stereology
in metallography, high temperature deformation, fracture and biology.
Ivan was author or co-author of three monographs and published many
papers in impacted journals. He was also a senior lecturer at the
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague and
a supervisor of many successful PhD students. He was also very active
in organizing scientific conferences: co-chairmen of six international
conferences Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture (MSMF1-6)
in Brno, organizer of the 6th International Conference on Stereology,
Spatial Statistics and Stochastic Geometry (S4G) in Prague, etc.
