Brief overview of MSMF conferences

MSMF-1 - 1995

The basic idea of the MSMF-1 was to get together particularly the Czech and Slovak scientists working in the fields of physics and mechanics of fracture as well as of the materials structure modelling. Nearly 40 leading Czech and Slovak experts and some internationally recognised scientists from USA and Austria (e.g., V. Vitek, H. P. Stüwe, M. Zehetbauer) took part in 5 sessions of this colloquium. This national colloquium on Space Models of Microstructure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in September 7- 8 in Brno, Czech Republic.

MSMF-2 - 1998

The basic idea of the MSMF-2 was to get together an international society of materials scientists dealing with the advanced theoretical and experimental methods applied to modelling and investigation of materials structure and fracture. Therefore, appropriate sections and sessions were arranged according to the research approaches in contrast to the classical manner according to either material- or fracture classes. Thus, sections like Atomistic Models, Models Based on Crystal Defects, Numerical and Statistical Models, Advanced Experimental Methods and Relationships between Structure and Mechanical Properties appeared. The 2nd International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in July 1- 3, Brno, Czech Republic.

Nearly 100 scientists from 11 countries participated in the MSMF-2 meeting. Two plenary lectures were given by V. Vitek and C. Laird from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. Moreover, J. Petit (ENSMA, France), A. Krasowski (UAS, Ukraine), G. E. Beltz (Santa Barbara, California), M. Zehetbauer (Vienna Univ., Austria), R. Pippan (NAS, Austria) and R. de los Rios (SIRIUS, Univ. of Sheffield, U.K.) appeared among keynote lecturers. A complete stuff of leading Czech experts was present (P. Lukáč from the Charles Univ. in Prague, P. Lukáš and J. Polák from Inst. of Physics of Materials in Brno, I. Saxl from the Inst. of Mathematics in Prague, e.g.). Proceedings of the MSMF-2 consisted of the 4 special issues of scientific journals Metallic Materials (Kovové mater.) and Engineering Mechanics (Inž. mechanika). More than 90 oral and poster contributions were presented and discussed during the conference. Participants enjoyed also the accompanied social programme.

MSMF-3 - 2001

The basic idea of the MSMF-3 was to offer a view of the current power and ability of atomistic and mesoscopic approaches in fracture. The 3rd International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in June 27-29, Brno, Czech Republic.

Nearly 120 scientists from 20 countries participated in the MSMF-3 meeting. Three plenary lectures were given by C. H. Woo (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, SAR China), Y. Murakami (Kyushu University, Japan) and M. Yamaguchi (Kyoto University, Japan). Moreover, V. Vitek (University of Pennsylvania, USA), O. Kolednik (Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science, Austria) V. Pontikis (Centre d'Etudes de Chimie Métallurgique, France), W. Brocks (GKSS Research Centre, Germany), V. Panasyuk (Karpenko Physico- Mechanical Institute, Ukraine), F. Kroupa (Institute of Plasma Physics, Czechia), V. Paidar (Institute of Physics, Czechia), J. Matějíček (Institute of Plasma Physics, Czechia), A. Shaniavski (State Centre of Flight Safety of Civil Aviation, Russia), V. Troshchenko (Institute for Problems of Strength, Ukraine), J. Zuidema (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands) and M. Loretto (University of Birmingham, UK) appeared among keynote lecturers. Special COST section devoted to the Action 517 ”Cleaner Metals for Industrial Exploitation” was organised during the Conference. A complete stuff of leading Czech experts was present. Proceedings of the MSMF-3 consisted of the printed Abstract Booklet and CD ROM which content more than 100 oral and poster contributions (800 pages) presented and discussed during the conference. Participants enjoyed also the accompanied social programme.

MSMF-4 - 2004

The basic idea of the MSMF-4 was to offer a view of multiscale approaches in modeling deformation and fracture. The 4th International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture was held on June 23-25, 2004 in Brno.

Nearly 140 scientists from 20 countries participated in the MSMF-4 meeting. Five plenary lectures were given by Arthur J. McEvily (University of Connecticut, USA), Yuri Estrin (Clausthal University of Technology, Germany), Wolfgang Dietzel (GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht, Germany), Takayuki Kitamura (Kyoto University, Japan) and Glenn E. Beltz (University of California, USA). Moreover, M. Šob (Masaryk University, Czech Republic), Y. Katz (Negba, Israel), Z. Xiao Guo (University of London, GB), M. Toyosada (Kyushu University, Japan), A. E. Romanov (Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Russia), E. Macha (Technical University of Opole, Poland), Y. Champion (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France), V. Sklenička (Institute of Physics of Materials, Czech Republic), Yu. V. Milman (Institute for Problems of Materials Science, Ukraine), T. Watanabe (Tohoku University, Japan), V. Paidar (Institute of Physics, Czech Republic), M. J. Hytch (Centre d’Etude de Chimie Métallurgique, France), Y. Kondo (Kyushu University, Japan), J. Polák (Institute of Physics of Materials, Czech Republic), P. Lukáč (Charles University, Czech Republic) and I. Dlouhý (Institute of Physics of Materials, Czech Republic) appeared among keynote lecturers. Proceedings of the MSMF-4 consisted of the printed Abstract Booklet and special issues of journals Materials Science Forum (410 pages) and Engineering Mechanics (80 pages) which content more than 120 oral and poster contributions presented and discussed during the conference. Participants enjoyed also the accompanied social programme.

MSMF-5 - 2007

The outline of the MSMF-5 is a multilevel approach to deformation and fracture of materials, components and structures. The 5th International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture, Brno, Czech Republic, June 27-29 continues the tradition of previous conferences.
