The basic idea of the MSMF-1 was to get together particularly the Czech and Slovak scientists working in the fields of physics and mechanics of fracture as well as of the materials structure modelling. Nearly 40 leading Czech and Slovak experts and some internationally recognised scientists from USA and Austria (e.g., V. Vitek, H. P. Stüwe, M. Zehetbauer) took part in 5 sessions of this colloquium. This national colloquium on Spatial Models of the Microstructure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in Brno, Czech Republic, September 7- 8. The contributions were published in the scientific journal Metallic Materials (Kovové mater).
The basic idea of the MSMF-2 was to get together an international society of materials scientists dealing with the advanced theoretical and experimental methods applied to modelling and investigation of materials structure and fracture. Therefore, appropriate sections and sessions were arranged according to the research approaches in contrast to the classical manner according to either material- or fracture classes. Thus, sections like Atomistic Models, Models Based on Crystal Defects, Numerical and Statistical Models, Advanced Experimental Methods and Relationships between Structure and Mechanical Properties appeared. The 2nd International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in Brno, Czech Republic, July 1- 3, 1998.
Nearly 100 scientists from 11 countries participated in the MSMF-2 meeting. Two plenary lectures were given by V. Vitek and C. Laird from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. Moreover, J. Petit (ENSMA, France), A. Krasowski (UAS, Ukraine), G. E. Beltz (Santa Barbara, California), M. Zehetbauer (Vienna Univ., Austria), R. Pippan (NAS, Austria) and R. de los Rios (SIRIUS, Univ. of Sheffield, U.K.) appeared among keynote lecturers. A complete stuff of leading Czech experts was present (P. Lukáč from the Charles Univ. in Prague, P. Lukáš and J. Polák from Inst. of Physics of Materials in Brno, I. Saxl from the Inst. of Mathematics in Prague, etc.). Proceedings of the MSMF-2 consisted of the 4 special issues of scientific journals Metallic Materials (Kovové mater.) and Engineering Mechanics (Inž. mechanika). More than 90 oral and poster contributions were presented and discussed during the conference. Participants enjoyed also the accompanied social programme.
The basic idea of the MSMF-3 was to offer a view of the current power and ability of atomistic and mesoscopic approaches in fracture. The 3rd International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture took place in Brno, Czech Republic, June 27-29, 2001.
Nearly 120 scientists from 24 countries participated in the MSMF-3 meeting. Three plenary lectures were given by C. H. Woo (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, SAR China), Y. Murakami (Kyushu University, Japan) and M. Yamaguchi (Kyoto University, Japan). Moreover, V. Vitek (University of Pennsylvania, USA), O. Matějíček (Institute of Plasma Physics, Czechia), A. Shaniavski (State Centre of Flight Safety of Civil Aviation, Russia), V. Troshchenko (Institute for Problems of Strength, Ukraine), J. Zuidema (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands) and M. Loretto (University of Birmingham, UK) appeared among keynote lecturers. Special COST section devoted to the Action 517 ”Cleaner Metals for Industrial Exploitation” was organised during the Conference. A complete stuff of leading Czech experts was present. Proceedings of the MSMF-3 consisted of the printed Abstract Booklet and CD ROM which content more than 100 oral and poster contributions (800 pages) presented and discussed during the conference. Participants enjoyed also the accompanied social programme.
The basic idea of the MSMF-4 was to offer a view of multiscale approaches in modeling deformation and fracture. The 4th International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture was held in Brno, Czech Republic, June 23-25, 2004.

7th international conference on Materials Structure and Micromechanics of Fracture was held in July 1 - 3, 2013. For the first time it was organized together with the Central European Institute of Technology. Distinguished guests of the conference were Dr. Marcus Dettenhofer, director of the Central European Institute of Technology in Brno, Professor Ehrenfried Zschech, President of the Federation of European Materials Societies, Professor Stefano Beretta, Vice-president of the European Structural Integrity Society and Professor Miroslav Doupovec, dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. As much as 263 participants from 34 countries came to Brno which represented the highest numbers in the history of MSMF conferences.

The Proceedings of MSMF7 traditionally appeared as a special issue of the journal Key Engineering Materials.
In the premises of the BUT atrium, the participants were greeted by the vice-rector of BUT together with the vice-director of CEITEC, and then they discussed with individual participants over light refreshments.
Besides the scientific program, a rich social program was arranged for all participants and especially for the accompanying persons. Many sightseeing of Brno and South Moravia could be visited as for example, the villa Tugendhat, a pioneering prototype of modern architecture in Europe protected by UNESCO.
The Starobrno restaurant continues the tradition of the Cistercian convent brewery, which was founded in 1325. This restaurant was the location of a rich conference dinner. Numerous professional and social discussions took place here as well. For listening and dancing, there was music that was common in historical beer halls.
8th international conference on Materials Structure and
Micromechanics of Fracture was held in June 27 - 29, 2016 and was organized
together with the Central European Institute of Technology. Two subconferences
were held as parts of MSMF-8: The third International Symposium on Atomistic
Modeling for Mechanics and Multiphysics of Materials (ISAM4) and the
eleventh Meeting of the Technical Committee on Micromechanisms of the ESIS (TC2).
As much as 209 participants from 29 countries came to Brno.

In addition to the scientific program, a rich social program was prepared for all participants and especially those accompanying them. Many monuments of Brno and South Moravia were visited, e.g. the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Denis Park, Zelný trh (Cabbage market) with the Baroque Parnassus Fountain, Capuchin Crypt, Brno Dragon, Villa Tugendhat, etc. The full-day trip to the Moravian Karst with the Macocha Abyss was highly rated. The journey to the conference dinner was enriched by a cruise on the Brno Reservoir by an electric boat with light refreshments. The restaurant on the bank of the dam then offered space for dinner with discussions and entertainment.

Micromechanics of Fracture was held in June 26 - 28, 2019 and was organized

Besides the scientific program, a rich social program was arranged for all participants and especially the accompanying persons. To know places from history to the present: the grounds of the Augustinian Abbey where Gregor Johann Mendel, the father of genetics, worked, but also the modern spaces at the faculty, where during the creative activity of our students, modern technologies and artistic design are combined. Many sightseeings of Brno and South Moravia were visited, such as, for example, St. Peters and Pauls Cathedral, Denis Park, Cabbage Market with baroque fountain Parnas, Capuchin Crypt, Brno's dragon, etc. The tour to one of the world heritage sites Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape and the conference dinner at the VIDA science center, where participants could try out dozens of exhibits, were also highly appreciated.
The 10th International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of
Fracture was held in September 12 - 14, 2022. The Meeting of the Technical Committee on Micromechanisms of the ESIS (TC2) was held as parts of MSMF-10.
As much as 127 participants from 19 countries came to Brno.

The traditional welcome by the rector of BUT took place in the atrium of the the historic building of rector's office. The rector appreciated the results of the participants' work, showed them around the building, and personally played the organ. After a refreshment of the soul, there was also a small banquet. In addition, conference dinners, associated with a get together and friendly chat over a glass of beer inside the Harry Minibrewery, received a great response.
The 11th International Conference on Materials Structure & Micromechanics of Fracture will follow in the traditional time span. Mark the last week in June 2025 in your work schedule. We look forward to the next meeting in Brno, Czech Republic.
